The beginning of a new year has many seeking goals to start anew or look at things in a more positive light. What better way to start the new year than seeing the first sunrise in the United States on January 1st.
The destination is Cadillac Mountain, Maine. It is located on Mount Desert Island in Acadia National Park, with an elevation of 1528 feet. Its original name was Green Mountain. In 1918, it was changed to honor French Explorer Antoine Laumet de la Mothe, Sieur de Cadillac. Starting in 1883, the Green Mountain Cog Railway allowed visitors to travel to the summit and stay at the Green Mountain Hotel. In 1895, the hotel burned down and the train was moved to New Hampshire; now known as the Mount Washington Cog Railway.
Contrary to popular belief, Cadillac Mountain only provides views of the first sunrise in the United States in the fall and winter. The sun rises first during most of the spring and summer on Mars Hill, just 150 miles northeast of Cadillac Mountain. Also, for a few weeks around the equinoxes, the sun rises first at West Quoddy Head in Lubec, Maine; the easternmost town in the United States.
